Although there is a mathematical component to hair restoration that can help us better understand what should be done for treatment of a hair loss patient, we have to consider individual differences too. Hair transplantation is a mixed of science, skill and artistry. People may be experiencing different results from different hair transplant surgeons because there is a variety of options when it comes to hair loss and hair restoration.
Most white Europeans and some African-Americans are born with about 100,000 single hair follicles. The number may be slightly different in other nationalities such as Asians and some Latinos and also Middle Eastern people. There is a variety of hair density in different parts of scalp, but in the back and sides of scalp hair density averages around 2 hairs per square millimeter in Caucasians.
Most people do not notice they are losing hair until they have lost more than thirty percent of their hair on any area. However, they need to lose more than seventy percent to look bald. The maximum hair density one should expect from a strip method FUT hair restoration procedure is about forty percent of original density, which is great considering the current technology. Hair loss need, continued loss of native hairs, surgical technique, surgical skill, donor area quality and availability will all play a factor in this as well.
If everything is available such as a qualified surgeon and staff and good donor quality, large number of grafts over 4000 grafts can be easily transplanted in a single strip method surgery. That is only when it is appropriate and warranted. These large surgeries that are also called giga-sessions can translate over 10,000 hair follicles in only one surgery.
Follicular Unit Extraction ('FUE') procedures are much more labor intensive and require a great deal more surgical time than strip method procedures. The maximum number of grafts, on average, per procedure utilizing FUE techniques is from one to two thousand grafts in each session of hair transplant. Patients who need more follicular unit grafts are required to undergo more than one hair transplantation.
